Joan Allison Perry Scholarship
Scholarship Value: $1000
Scholarship Deadline: March 01, 2025
Purpose: This fund was established in memory of Joan Allison Perry by her family to provide academic scholarships to graduating seniors of Marceline High School, MO. Joan taught business at Marceline High School from 1980 to 1992. She was a favorite teacher, mentor, and friend to many of her students and continued tutoring young people long after her retirement.
She was an accomplished woman in her personal life as well—valuing faith, kindness, civility, loyalty, and fair and equal treatment of all. She was a direct and honest person; rather than argue when in disagreement with someone, she would merely say, “You know, we don’t agree on that,” and leave it there. She was an advocate for those in need and was actively involved in civic and social organizations in Marceline. She loved having fun with friends and family and enjoyed a good joke, dancing, and card playing.
Criteria: To be eligible for the scholarship, you must meet the following:
Students must be graduating seniors intending to pursue a degree in business or education through a two- or four-year college/university or technical school.
Consideration will be given to financial need, school and community involvement, and character traits.
Students must submit an essay (500-word maximum) describing how this award will allow them to achieve their higher education goals and what their personal values are, and how they align with those demonstrated by Joan Allison Perry.

Burger King Scholars Program

Awards Available: 4200
Award Deadline: Dec 15, 2024
Through the BK℠ Scholars program, we’ve awarded nearly $60 million to over 51,000 deserving students across North America. Our goal is to grant one scholarship for every BK® restaurant — that’s more than $7 million each year!
Education is a key part of success, and we focus on bringing that to students in North America through our BK Scholars Program. The BK Scholars Program is the Foundation’s flagship program, established to honor the legacy of the Burger King brand’s co-founder James W. McLamore, whose commitment to philanthropy and education made him a pillar of community service throughout his lifetime. Through the program, we award scholarships to deserving high school seniors and Burger King® employees and their families to help advance their education. Because of Jim, his legacy, and the support of franchisees, the scholars program has now awarded a total of $60 million in scholarships to more than 51,000 deserving students throughout North America since 2000.
Scholarships range from $1,000 to $60,000 and are intended to offset the cost of attending college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Recipients are selected through an application process that takes into consideration their grade point average (GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities, financial need and community service. In 2024 alone, the Foundation awarded over $4.5 million in scholarships to nearly 4,200 students. Scholarship status updates were shared on Monday, April 20, 2024.
The application period for the 2024-2025 will open from October 15, 2024 to December 15, 2024. Scholarship recipients will be notified April 2025.

PHADA Scholarship Program
Stephen J. Bollinger Memorial Scholarship
Civil Rights & Social Justice Scholarship
Nan McKay Pathway to Achievement Scholarship
Scholarship Value: Stephen J. Bollinger Memorial Scholarship-$10,000, Civile Rights and Social Justice Scholarship-$$5,000, Nan McKay Pathway to Achievement Scholarship-$5,000
Scholarship Deadline: January 24, 2025
*Note: You must reside in public housing or assisted housing to qualify for these scholarships.
In order to encourage academic excellence and community responsibility among high school students, PHADA has implemented a scholarship program for graduating seniors who are preparing to enter college. PHADA will award three scholarships to deserving youth currently residing in a PHADA member agency.
Stephen J. Bollinger Memorial Scholarship (One scholarship available: $10,000) Steve Bollinger (April 11, 1948 – June 18, 1984) was a taskmaster to himself, a human dynamo to those who knew him. He was a natural leader, a person who could rally people around him with wit, satire, and vocal exercises. Steve’s knowledge of and dedication to housing those in need was never absent, especially after he was appointed Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development at HUD. His experience at the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority and the associations he had with colleagues, mayors, and others afforded him the opportunity to deal with the bureaucracy in a style that we strive to attain. To the members of PHADA, he was a friend. His belief in the housing profession motivated him to become a founding member of PHADA, for which he served as Vice President. He accomplished much in a short time and we are all thankful for his achievements. PHADA created this scholarship to memorialize Stephen J. Bollinger.
This scholarship will be formally presented at PHADA’s Annual Convention & Exhibition (May 13–16, 2025, Seattle, WA). The winner will receive a trip for him/herself and one parent/guardian to attend the convention.
Civil Rights and Social Justice Scholarship (One scholarship available: $5,000) Additional Essay Required (see below) In 2005, PHADA’s Board of Trustees met in Montgomery, AL. Inspired by historical sites they chose to give personal donations for the inception of a PHADA scholarship to honor the work of Rosa Parks and the achievements of the civil rights movement.
To be considered for the Civil Rights and Social Justice Scholarship, include an additional personal essay (350–500 words) demonstrating your efforts, and involvement in furthering the values of the civil rights and social justice movements. Explain why these causes are relevant today and how they relate to your educational goals. Include any relevant volunteer experiences and involvement related to advancing the causes of civil rights and social justice.
Nan McKay Pathway to Achievement Scholarship (One scholarship available: $5,000) Nan McKay has offered significant financial support to PHADA’s scholarship program and has elected to reward one deserving youth with a $5,000 scholarship. PHADA appreciates their commitment to serving the needs of public housing residents and the community.

Regional judging
At the regional level, the process is repeated. The regional chair arranges for all of the essays referred from local chapters to be judged a second time. Regional judges rank the local winners and nominate the best essays for regional and national awards. These essays are then forwarded to the National Scholarship Chairs.

Finally, the National Scholarship Chairs conduct additional rounds of judging to select the regional and national winners. Each applicant can receive only one Mensa Foundation scholarship per year; therefore, the winners are chosen beginning at the highest dollar amounts. The next highest scores receive awards of the next lower amounts, and so on until all the winners are chosen based on the judges’ scores.
